Elkhorn, NE: Celebrating World Class Care; Michaela Stary Receives Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse (CRRN) Certification

On February 5th, 2008 Michaela Stary joined the Brookestone Meadows team as a Charge Nurse on our Nemaha neighborhood. Michaela started as a Certified Nursing Assistant in 1997 and progressed from Certified Medication Aide, to Charge Nurse, to evening Supervisor, to her current position as Assistant Director of Nursing. Michaela states, “I have basically been working in the rehabilitation setting my whole career.” That is good since it takes a minimum of two years as a Registered Nurse in a rehabilitation setting to be eligible to sit for the CRRN exam. When asked why she wanted to achieve this certification, Michaela said, “I received encouragement from both Administrators at Brookestone Meadows. I like to continue to educate myself on best practices for my setting so that patients are given the best care possible.” With that, we also know that Michaela is a Certified Gerontological Nurse. According to Michaela, her passion for learning and providing the best care “opens me to lots of resources on evidenced-based practice, in which I can use for patient care as the healthcare is developing and ever-changing.” Before the exam Michaela registered for a two-day course in October 2013 at Methodist Hospital for a review of the test. She then studied for the exam until December 2013. “The scope of the exam requires extensive education on all disciplines involving rehabilitation nursing; spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, cardiac, respiratory, amputations, orthopedic, gerontology, bowel/bladder function, pediatrics, sexual function, neurological effect, nutrition, payment sources (private insurance, MCR, MCD) , nursing theory, and the development of the rehabilitation nursing field and associated legislation/acts.” Whew!

Michaela states that her favorite part of being a nurse here at Brookestone is that “the whole team (all departments), are very friendly and work very cohesively to deliver outstanding patient care”. Obviously you can see her passion is in the “care” that is being provided for all we serve.

As part of the Vetter Health Services family, Brookestone Meadows strives to hire the “Best of the Best” as we provide a “World Class” environment for rehabilitation and care. Michaela is a wonderful example of our excellent teams. Congratulations Michaela!
