Dr. Gary Anthone to Join Vetter Senior Living as Chief Medical Officer

Vetter Senior Living today announced Dr. Gary Anthone will join the company as Chief Medical Officer in January of 2023. 

“Doctor Anthone has a wealth of experience in healthcare leadership, and we are thrilled he has agreed to join our team,” commented Glenn Van Ekeren, President of Vetter Senior Living. In his new role, Dr. Anthone will further the company’s commitment to world-class results and help influence change through innovative and supportive approaches to senior care.

Dr. Anthone is currently the Chief Medical Officer and Director of the Division of Public Health for the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. He oversees ten public health areas that promote good health, prevent disease and help Nebraskans live healthier lives. His last day in this role will be January 5, 2023.

In a statement announcing Dr. Anthone’s departure, Governor-elect Jim Pillen praised Dr. Anthone for his service. “I want to thank Dr. Anthone for all his hard work and resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic,” commented Pillen, “It was through his leadership that Nebraska had one of the best and most efficient responses to the pandemic.”    

Before joining the State of Nebraska, Dr. Anthone owned a private surgical practice in Omaha, where he was also a faculty member in the Department of Surgery at Creighton University.  From 2004 – 2016, he was the director of Bariatric Surgery at Methodist Hospital in Omaha and from 1991 – 2003 was Director of the Bariatrics Program and an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.  In addition, he was selected by his peers as a member of the Best Doctors in America from 2005 – 2020.  Moreover, Dr. Anthone is an active member of the medical community, he has served in committee leadership roles in both Nebraska and California, including those dealing with human services. 

Dr. Anthone holds a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Benedictine College in Kansas. He earned his Master of Science and his M.D. from Creighton University. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery.
